If we talk about the largest possible digit in decimal number system, then the number which comes in our mind is non other than 9.
So,
1 digit largest number = 9
2 digit largest number = 99
3 digit largest number = 999
4 digit largest number = 9,999
and so on . . .
In the above, numbers are increasing the digits from right to left means,
. . . . . Thousand Hundred Tens Ones
Now, if we talk about the largest possible number in mathematics then it will be like ...9999 infinite times
Therefore,
Largest possible number = . . . . . 9999
If we expand or write this number is it's place value format,
. . . 9999 = . . . + 9×10³ + 9×10² + 9×10¹ + 9×10⁰
So, we got an infinite series for this number
Now,
Let S = . . . 9999
=> S = 9×10⁰ + 9×10¹ + 9×10² + 9×10³ + . . .
=> S = 9×10⁰ + 10( 9×10⁰ + 9×10¹ + 9×10² + . . . )
=> S = 9 + 10( S ) ----- (The series inside bracket is also S)
=> S = -1
=> . . . 9999 = -1
From above, it is clear that the value of . . . 999 is equal to -1 means the value of largest possible number is -1.
Now,
Lets take another number i.e . . . . 99998 then by using same method we get
. . . 99998 = -2
I know that it's shocking and unrealistic. But I am just telling what I am getting.
I want to tell you something.
We know that,
-1 × -2 = 2
So, if
. . . 9999 = -1
and
. . . .9998 = -2
then
. . . 9999 × . . . 9998 should be 2.
